In order to get what you are looking for, as a business owner, you need to know what is required to create a website.Where would you start if you had to bring at the office all the ingredients to design a website for your company? I’m going to show you in this post which elements you have to put in your shopping car to create a site that fulfill your expectations.

First of all, ask to yourself these questions:

  1. Why do I want to build a website and what I want to achieve when it’s finished?
  2. Who is going to be involved in the project? (Partners, stakeholders, colleagues)
  3. Which technology will be required? If you’re not into technology, just explain the first question to someone who deals with it.
  4. What’s my deadline and budget for this project?

Once you are aware of those factors, it’s time to grab your shopping car and buy the first two services required to build your presence online.

First of all, register a domain name for your company. Your domain name could be,, .ORG, .BIZ, .US, etc. Nowadays you can find your domain with many extensions, the most common one is .COM, but if your name is already taken by somebody else, you can get any extension that goes according to your business. Keep it short, if you can, and find a name related with your product or service. For example, if your business is about car rental, try to use one of those words in your domain or a combination of both whenever is possible. This will help you later when you begin to optimize your website on the search engines.

The second step is to get a hosting service. The hosting is the rent you need to pay online every month while you are in business. With your hosting you can get your own e-mail. Remember that it is not the same doing business with a free e-mail account like than with the name your company
Now it’s time to plan how you are going to engage your visitors. We are talking here about digital content. Which information will be necessary on your site? Brainstorm a content list, for example:

  • Description and images of your products or services.
  • About us or biographies of the executives in the company.
  • A FAQ section.
  • A banner to highlight some info in the homepage
  • A headshot of your company team.
  • A corporate video

Later on, you could think about different ways to drive traffic to your site and to keep in touch audience. It could be a blog, a forum, a webinar, a Facebook page, or a twitter account.Once you have the necessary content, it will be easier for you to decide how to distribute it. Keep in mind the goal of your business. It’s going to help you to identify the most important from the less important. For a small project, it can word a diagram like this:
